It is important to remove all the bubbles from the perfusate before going on bypass. By using the hose end to Leur Lok connector on the end of one of the suction lines, the cannula and connector can be completely freed of air bubbles.
A cannula aspirator can be connected to the end of one of the suction lines of the heart-lung bypass set-up to aspirate air from the connector and cannula. This technique is faster than using a syringe, and the blood can be saved by putting it back into the system. (See Figure 2)
