An Investigation of the Communication and Task Relationships Between Cardiothoracic Anesthesia Providers and Cardiopulmonary Perfusionists During Cardiopulmonary Bypass
Circulation Technology Division of School of Allied Medical Professions, Ohio State University
The purpose of this study was to determine if a potential risk exists to patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) due to failures in communication and task relationships between the cardiothoracic anesthesis provider (CAP) and the cardiopulmonary perfusionist (CPP). Survey data was gathered to identify the current protocol and practice interaction of the CAP and the CPP during CPB. Additionally, questions were asked to determine potential problems between the two groups and the known risks to the patient. Tabulation of data showed that the majority of both groups do not perceive a problem with task assignments or a significant risk to patient morbidity or mortality. However, disagreement on certain problems inherent to this relationship are apparent in the data. For example, the use of anesthesiology relief, the lack of knowledge about perfusion practice, and the lack of knowledge about emergency procedures were identified as problems experienced in the workplace. In addition, paired data obtained from matched respondents suggested different perceptions about task assignments and the number of problems inherent in this relationship.
